8740w DreamColor missing color spaces
03-03-2011 07:59 PM - last edited on 03-03-2011 08:03 PM
I recently went through an issue with the DreamColor display on my 8740w. Other owners have had the same problem, but HP has not communicated this problem through the organization. As a result, owners are faced with uninformed tech support, which is always frustrating. This post seeks first to help owners identify the issue, and second to let them know what useless hoops HP is going make them jump through to get an adequate resolution. A third unlikely goal is that perhaps HP can improve their response to owners with this problem.
1) The Problem
DreamColor displays use a piece of software offered by HP called Mobile Display Assistant (MDA). MDA in turn provides proper color settings so the DreamColor panel can display colors in standard color profiles. When you run MDA, you should be able to select from the following color profiles:
Full
AdobeRGB
sRGB
Rec.601
Rec.708
DCI P3 Emulation
When you run MDA, the selection menu should look something like this:
Many owners who received their DreamColor 8740w machines since the new year have not had these selections available. Instead we get profiles named:
ST-Factory-1
ST-Factory-2
etc…
2) HP’s Troubleshooting
In an effort to check if this is a software issue, HP tech support will require you first to make sure you are running the most recent version of MDA. You can see the version under the settings tab in MDA, which currently is 2.03. Go ahead and check that and make a note. If you aren’t up to date, you might as well just uninstall it before installing the newest version. This will save you a step since Tech Support’s next checklist item is to make you do a re-install after the direct update fails to fix the problem.
So, note your current version, uninstall no matter what it is, download the newest version from HP’s website and install. The program does store things in the registry, so if you know how to clear that, you can do it too. I don’t know how to guide you though that, but at this point it appears to be useless and will just cost you more time.
Given the experience of all the owner’s I’ve communicated with, the above will have done you no good. Now HP Tech Support will require you to do one of the following.
a) Pop in a known-good HDD from that other working DC equipped 8740w you have.
What’s that? You don’t have another one? OK.
b) Reinstall your OS. Yeah, I know. It sucks. And best of all, given my current information, all signs indicate this will be a complete waste of your time.
3) Solution
After wasting a bunch of time with HP Tech Support on Step 2 above, you will finally be given the golden ticket to a screen replacement. If you have on-site support (most 8740w come with on-site by default) then they will pass your case file out to your local support team. They will call you and set up a time to replace it. If you are lucky, this will go relatively quickly. However, HP does not keep huge quantities of DC screens on hand, so you might face additional delays if the screen is not in-stock.
If you have gone or are going through this issue, I’d be interested in hearing from you. I’m especially curious if I can find a single person who had this issue resolved by reinstalling the OS.
()
Also, if you are within 30 days of delivery, you can easily get them to replace the whole laptop. Just keep in mind the DreamColor screen will still be a possible bottleneck. I've been through several replacements since this summer, the last one took 4 weeks to arrive after my on-site tech made the replacement recommendation. So that path might actually be longer.
